Key stage 4

During years 10 and 11 students study the OCR Level 1/2 Cambridge National Certificate in Health and Social Care. It is a two year course during which time students study four different units:

  • Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings (Examined unit)
  • Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings
  • (coursework unit)
  • Understanding body systems (coursework unit)
  • Understanding the nutrients needed for good health

The course is equivalent to one GCSE and provides an excellent introduction for anyone who may want to study health and social care at level 3, either in our 6th form or at college.

Key stage 5

We offer two courses:

The Health and Social Care Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care (360 GLH) – 1XA level equivalent

Health and Social Care Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care (720 GLH) –2XA level equivalent

Both courses are two years in duration and involve a combination of examined and coursework units on topics such as:

  • Building positive relationships in health and social care
  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
  • Health, safety and security in health and social care
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care   

Candidates achieving this qualification have the following progression opportunities:

  • Enter employment at trainee level, e.g. as a care assistant, playgroup assistant, health care assistant
  • Enter employment and undertake a related NVQ at a level appropriate to the job role, e.g. NVQ Care, NVQ Early Years Care and Education
  • Undertake higher level qualifications in further or higher education, e.g. HNC, HND,
